According to a recent report by Kaspersky, over half of parents in the UK are unaware of the dangers their children face online, and as a result, children are putting themselves at serious risk from cyber-attacks.

The report, which surveyed 5,369 children and 665 adults across seven countries in Europe, highlights a stark reality: many parents are not taking adequate steps to educate their children about online safety. In fact, only 29% of adults are currently helping their children identify threats online, leaving them vulnerable to phishing scams and other forms of cyber-attacks.

The lack of online security education is having a profound impact on the younger generation. According to Kaspersky research, 65% of 11-15 year olds are unable to spot one or more phishing scam email, while nearly half (48%) of children in this age group who think they are knowledgeable about online security have actually fallen victim to a phishing scam.

This is not just a problem for children, however. The report also reveals that many adults are unaware of the threats they face online themselves. In fact, 48% of adults admitted to including personal information such as their name and date of birth on social media channels, while only 8% of those who said they were not knowledgeable about online security had been a victim of a phishing scam.

The lack of understanding around online safety is a global issue, with Kaspersky's research showing that children in Europe are no exception. The report highlights the need for broadened education on online safety, including coverage of attacks such as phishing scams and malware.

As David Emm, Principal Security Researcher at Global Research and Analysis, notes: 'Our findings show that a little bit of knowledge can be a powerful tool in keeping us safe online. However, more online education and information is needed to help every generation identify threats and stay safe.'
